Our latest project brings a fresh set of animated inserts created for a documentary series about a renowned Polish pop celebrity – Doda. Designed to seamlessly integrate with the live-action footage, these animations add rhythm and unique personality to the series. The three-part documentary series is available on Amazon Prime Video as one of its flagship productions in the Polish market.
Animation
Due to the different narrative needs of the documentary, the animation naturally split into two distinct techniques that remained cohesive through a hand-drawn, grunge style.
The first is a surreal collage inspired by the artist’s diary, archival materials and press clippings. With dynamic animation, smooth transitions and a stop-motion feel we present key moments of the story steeped in scandal-driven tabloid culture.
In the second, more narrative approach, we focus on reconstructing events from the protagonist’s perspective. The slightly surreal hand-drawn animation immerses viewers in her inner world, with a monochromatic look punctuated by a bold, signature pink - a key element in the singer’s artistic identity.
Character design
Given that the documentary features well-known figures from the Polish celebrity landscape, it was essential to craft stylized yet recognizable portrayals of their real-life counterparts.
For the protagonist, Doda, we created different character sets reflecting her style and artistic evolution over many years. Each design was inspired by archive footage or her music videos to ensure the animation felt true and authentic.
Development
Starting from the concepts and storyboards, we thoughtfully planned the animated inserts to convey key moments with clarity and emotional weight, while aligning with the documentary's content.
Each scene was carefully designed to make sure that composition, lighting and details carry meaning and add depth to the story.
In the short collage sequences, we focused on maintaining a careful balance: scenes needed enough space for viewers to absorb headlines and visual cues, yet still convey the inherent chaos of tabloid media.
Making of
For the retrospective segments we mostly used cel animation, with Animate as our primary tool, which allowed us to create dynamic camera work and fluid motion. We brought everything together in After Effects, adding textures, lighting and depth for a more cinematic look.
Some of the scenes were brought to life using our trusted tool, Moho. Our expertise in this medium allows us to seamlessly blend various animation styles into a cohesive and captivating visual experience.
